If you enjoy food and live in or around the Atlanta area, I’m sure you can appreciate its ever-changing food scene; there’s always something new coming. Recently, I received an invitation to explore the menu of one of the city’s newer Westside eateries, Yum Bunz.

I bet you’re wondering what’s in that name. Well here it is…

buns

These are called Bao which are steamed, filled buns made with yeast. They can be savory, filled with meat or vegetables or they can be sweet, filled with something lovely like chocolate. At Yum Bunz, they’re offered as a fast food version of the traditional Asian meal.

szechuan chicken bun

The ones I tried were the Szechuan Chicken and

spinach and cheese bun

the veggie bun, filled with Spinach, Cheese and Mushroom. I opened these with my hands so forgive the rough edges but do take note of how light and fluffy the buns are inside.

I did expect the Szechuan Chicken bun to be spicier and bolder in flavor but the mildness of it was no turn off. I would try it again. The Spinach & Cheese bun was a nice surprise because it’s hard to get cooked spinach flavored properly for my taste. Yum Bunz got it right on seasoning this one.

chicken pho

In addition to the buns, I tried the Pho Vietnamese Noodle Soup with chicken.

beef pho

My sister who joined me on this journey tried it with flank steak. The soups were flavorful and warming. We both tried the Hoisin Sauce stir-in which added another level of flavor and we also made good use of the bean sprouts, Thai basil, jalapeno and lime which are served on the side. This is exactly the sort of dish I look for during the Fall and Winter months.

What I like about the buns and the soup was the use of fresh ingredients. It’s evident in the appearance and taste of the meal.

mango margarita

pinot noir

To wash all of this goodness down I tried the Mango & Kaffir Lime Frozen Margarita while my sister enjoyed a glass of Pinot Noir. Let’s just say that a trip back to enjoy margaritas and buns is in my near future.

lemon ginger cheesecake

As a special treat we shared the Lemon Ginger Cheesecake. What a creamy, beautiful dessert. Don’t get me started on those sweet little pieces of ginger.

Overall, I’m happy having Yum Bunz as another fast food destination in Atlanta. The food is a good alternative to your run of the mill burger and fry. The ingredients are fresh, and service is fast, courteous and presented with a smile. I’m taking Steeler Fan with me next time.

Interested in trying it for yourself? Visit the Yum Bunz website to see the menu and to get more information.
